Lacertid endemic to Gran Canaria. The largest of the Canary Island lizards, reaching 80 cm. Full-bodied, dark greyish to reddish brown with clear transverse bands and a dark band on the back. Omnivorous but predominantly vegetarian. Lives up to 11 years.
