Almond trees are abundant in the middle altitudes of Gran Canaria. In January and February, the higher parts of Valsequillo provide a splendid floral carpet of white and pink tones. The “Almendro en Flor” (Almond in Bloom) festivities have been held in Valsequillo and Tejeda since 1960. These festivities celebrate this species, which served as sustenance for entire families. Its fruit still contributes to local cuisine and baking.
